At Fabbrica del Vapore, the exhibition MACRO POP is presented, dedicated to Luca Vernizzi, one of Italy’s most important portrait painters, organized on the occasion of his eighty-fifth birthday. The son of the renowned painter Renato Vernizzi, author, among other works, of one of the most famous portraits of Arturo Toscanini, Luca Vernizzi has devoted his entire life to painting, while also teaching Drawing at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera for nearly forty years.

Known for his large canvases and live portraits of major figures in Italian culture, including Giorgio Armani, Giulietta Masina, Walter Chiari, and Vittorio Sgarbi, Vernizzi has also developed an original line of research dedicated to the portrait of objects.

The exhibition brings together 46 works, including large canvases, paintings on wood, and a series of works on paper. At the center of the artist’s investigation are everyday objects: keys, glasses, fruit, detergents, watering cans, and eyeglasses, depicted on monumental scales and isolated in neutral spaces. Through this “macro pop” scale, Vernizzi transforms common and seemingly banal elements into intense, contemplative presences, inviting viewers to reflect on the relationship between individual experience, memory, and material culture.

These “things,” often overlooked in daily life, become tools for narrating our time. As suggested by a famous reflection by Jorge Luis Borges, objects accompany us silently and end up preserving traces of our existence, becoming witnesses to both personal and collective history.
