Cassina Projects presents a new cycle of paintings by Alessandro Fogo, deepening his investigation into the sacred, myth, and the symbolic construction of the image. In Un assoluto al posto di Dio (An Absolute in place of God), the artist develops a stratified visual language in which historical and iconographic references coexist with an intimate and contemporary dimension, generating perceptual short circuits between past and present.
The works construct suspended yet plausible environments, where familiar figures suddenly appear estranged. References to Masaccio, Constantin Brâncuși, and Balthus emerge as reworked traces, stripped of their original function and relocated within domestic and theatrical settings. The result is a constant tension between recognizability and loss of meaning, destabilizing the image.
At the core of the research lies the concept of the “Absolute,” understood as a contemporary substitute for the divine: a void that is not denied, but interrogated through new symbolic constellations. The figures, often still and statuesque, hold a latent tension, suspended between appearance and dissolution, between physical presence and mental projection.
Painting thus becomes the site where this ambivalence takes form: a space in which reality fractures and is redefined, allowing an unstable dimension to emerge: one in which subject and image gradually tend to coincide.
